Brakes

One of the most important parts of your motorcycle are the brakes, as they ensure that each time you are out on the road, your ride is as safe as possible.

Inspect the front and rear brake lines, throttle, idle and clutch cables. Check the brake pads to see how much is left on both the front and rear brakes. Replacing the pads when they’re worn is absolutely essential for your safety and prevents the rotor or disk from being damaged.

Tires

The tire pressure of your motorcycle has a huge effect on the handling characteristics of your vehicle. But ironically enough, most riders neglect to keep them pumped with the right amount of air. Check the tire pressure by using a pressure gauge before you head out.  The minimum and maximum pressure for the tires is mentioned in the owner’s manual, so make sure to do your homework to prevent a sudden tire blowout in the middle of nowhere! It’s also important to inspect the tread. If the wear bars are almost flush with the tire tread, or if there are any unusual patterns such as flat spots or cuts, it’s time to replace them with new ones.

Lights

When you’re riding in the dark, it is crucial that you can see clearly and are visible to other drivers on the road. Check the brake lights, running lights, turn signals, emergency lights, high beams, and the headlamp. Look for cracks or loose lenses and reflectors. If anything isn’t working, replace the bulb before hitting the road.

Suspension System

A great suspension system ensures that your motorcycle rides over road bumps smoothly and gives complete control of steering and handling, which is critical for a safe and comfortable ride.Your riding prep should always involve a thorough checking of your motorcycle suspension.

Throttle

Simple adjustments can make your bike more responsive and ensure a smooth riding experience. Check the throttle, brake, and clutch levers for a bit of free play. Turn the handlebar right and left with the engine running idle to make sure that the throttle moves freely and snaps closed when released. If the engine revs when the handlebars are turned, make sure that it is repaired immediately.

Battery

Make sure the battery is securely mounted. A loose battery can get damaged due to it bouncing around and absorbing additional vibrations and bumps. Make sure that there are no loose connections and corrosion on the battery terminals.

Fluid and Oil Levels

One of the most intrinsic parts of your motorcycle riding prep is checking the oil levels. You should always check if the engine oil level is right and change the oil if required. There are also other fluids in your motorcycle that need your attention. Check the clutch and radiator coolant, inspecting closely to detect any leakage. Run your finger over the exposed section of the fork to rule out broken fork seals. Also, inspect the radiator and engine hoses for telltale white marks which indicate a loss of lubricant.
